TitleDevelopment of biodegradable and bioactive vascular prosth
CategoryPhD Studentship
EmployerUniversity of Genoa, DICCA
LocationItaly, GE, Genoa
InternationalYes, international applications are welcome
Closure DateSunday, June 30, 2024
Description:
The Research Centre of Biologically Inspired Engineering in Vascular Medicine and Longevity (BELONG), in collaboration with Chemical Engineering at the politechnical school in Genova, Italy is world leading in areas such as development of biodegradable vascular scaffolds and the development of nanoparticles for drug delivery. TOPIC: The manufacturing and validation of biodegradable, bioabsorbable, and bioactive small-diameter vascular scaffolds (VSs) represent the ultimate goal of vascular tissue engineering. Despite significant research progress in this field, no biodegradable and bioabsorbable VS has been approved for clinics to date. Next-generation VSs must overcome the limitations of currently available vascular prostheses (i.e., thrombogenic properties for diameters less than 6 mm and risk of bacterial colonization). The object of the study is an electrospun prosthesis made of biodegradable, biocompatible polymers, engineered with bioactive molecules capable of modulating the vessel regeneration process. POSITION: a 3-year position for PhD, with a scholarship, at the doctoral school of the Department of Civile, Chemical and Environmental Engineering in Genova, Italy TASKS: The work consists of carrying out laboratory studies to characterize the vascular scaffold construct in a high performance bioreactor. Furthermore, the numerical analysis of the effect of fluid dynamics on the properties of the construct will be part of the study. YOUR PROFILE: • A strong interest in biomechanics and biomaterials • A good background in mathematics, chemistry and computational methods • High skills in writing scientific publications • Solid skills in laboratory work, skills in processing data, and visualization of simulation data • Ability to work both in a team and autonomously • Very good spoken and written English language for communication within the group and project partners and for the presentation of scientific results in international conferences are required • Candidates should be holding a M.Sc. degree, preferably in Chemical Engineering (or equivalent; with written thesis) INTERESTED?: If you are interested in this position then please send us a brief motivation of your interest along with your CV. Qualified candidates will be contacted within a week for a preliminary interview.
