Towards a computational model of mitral valve


Project Summary, Aim and Objectives:
Mitral valves play a crucial role in maintaining blood flow in the heart, and 
thus, their impairments can be catastrophic to the body. The mechanical 
behaviour of valve tissue while interacting with passing blood is a key 
determining factor in most valve diseases. Predicting it under different 
conditions is vital for effective patient treatment. Given the prohibitive 
difficulties for experimental setups, simulation tools have received significant 
attention for such studies. This project primarily aims to develop patient-
specific simulation models to characterise the mechanical behaviour of the 
mitral valve, enabling surgeons to simulate operational scenarios.
Utilizing an open-source computational mechanics tool, OpenFOAM, our approach is 
to develop a fluid-solid model for blood-valve interaction. The workflow 
involves importing valve geometry, modelling valve tissue interactions with 
itself and with passing blood, incorporating an anisotropic material model for 
the valve, and considering the influence of chordae connections on the valve's 
mechanical behaviour. This study explores state-of-the-art approaches and 
leverages OpenFOAM’s capabilities by implementing new libraries, e.g., promising 
material models for heart valves. 
Participation in this project develops PhD the students’ expertise in 
computational modelling, open-source software development, and problem-solving 
skills in biomechanics. They also gain proficiency in collaborative skills for 
interdisciplinary research.
