Understanding and modelling the response of bubbles to pressure waves is of paramount importance for numerous energy generation, structural, and biomedical applications. With regards to the latter, it can lead to safer and more effective medical procedures such as ultrasound and shockwave therapies (targeting tumour ablation, kidney stone fragmentation, tissue regeneration, or pain management) and drug delivery.

Recent experimental findings suggest the existence of universality in the post-impact partitioning of wave energy into various flow elements [Bokman et al., JFM, 967, A33 (2023)]. This is a particularly important finding, as it relates to the principles of similarity and balance, which allow us to identify the key mechanisms that govern the flow, and develop accurate models of it.

This project will leverage recent advances in the computational modelling of multiphase flows to launch a campaign of state-of-the-art CFD simulations. Computational modelling will be combined with a recently proposed data-driven technique that enables the identification of similarity and universality in complex fluid flows. Gaining a deeper understanding of universality, similarity, and balance will lead to the development of improved models and will open up opportunities to control both advantageous and undesirable outcomes of wave- bubble interaction across a wide spectrum of applications.

Funding and Eligibility:

Candidates will need to secure Conacyt scholarship. Only available for Mexican students.
